This post explains hashtags really well – much better than I usually manage to! Thanks

I went to an American Ed Research conference last month (AERA) and they promoted their event hashtag #AERA13 clearly – had it on signage, in the program etc. People’s twitter handles were also on their nametag, if provided. The ‘backchannel’ it helped to create was excellent! Even if I skipped a session, I could read tweets from most keynotes as they came up live by following the hashtag.

Thanks Jonathan. I have just completed my first Gantt chart for my Doctorate in Health. I was beginning to get a bit jumpy about some of the very involved instructions I had found previously so your ‘idiots guide’ was really helpful.

Couldn’t agree more. Also, there are different “styles” for writing these — so watch how different people go about theirs and plagiarise their strategies as they suit you.

Good point, Michael. And when you read them, read actively. Critique them.

Which brings us back to getting your friends and colleagues to read your draft, and reading theirs. Reading other people’s drafts is a great way to learn how to improve your own.

Try to get access to successful (and unsuccessful) applications. This will help illustrate the kind of material that is expected in different parts of the application. So just don’t talk with people – ask to read their application if that is possible. Some unis have a store of successful applications that are available to applicants.
